5 Things You Didn’t Know about Bruno Mars

International Grammy-award winning superstar, Bruno Mars is going to be headlining the Resolution By Night festival this New Year’s Eve in Abu Dhabi. So we thought we’d get you better acquainted with the brilliant showman. Here are our 5 things you didn’t know about Bruno Mars…

1. Bruno Mars isn’t his real name

Alright, well you probably guessed that, but did you know that Peter Gene Bayot Hernandez is Bruno’s real name? At the age of two, his Dad started calling him by the nickname of “Bruno”after professional wrestler, Bruno Sammartino. Apparently young Bruno reminded his dad of the wrestler. He must have been one mean looking two year old if he resembled this guy (p.s. how funny is this commentator?!):

2. He was an Elvis impersonator at the age of 3

A born performer, Bruno joined his uncle on stage at age 3, impersonating The King. By age 4 he had joined his family’s band, The Love Notes and was gaining notoriety in his home country of Hawaii for his stage presence. He was even noticed by Hollywood film execs and cast alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicolas Cage in the hit film, “Honeymoon in Vegas” where he showed off his Elvis act. Check out the little guy in action. Cute eh?

3. Four of Bruno’s siblings have their own band

Bruno is one of six, with a brother and four sisters. His sisters share in his musical talents and in 2013, they formed their own band called the Lylas- an abbreviation of “love you like a sister”. Here’s one of their most popular tracks.

4. He writes songs for other artists too

A skilled song writer, Bruno doesn’t just write his own smash hits, he writes for other singers too. Some artists he’s written for include Jay-Z and Kanye West (Lift Off), Adam Lambert (Never Close Our Eyes), Adele (All I ask), Flo Rida ft. Kesha (Right Round):

5. Bruno’s a talented musician as well as singer

Bruno is something of a beast on the drums. He also plays the keyboard, bass and guitar. Check out this drum solo from the 2014 Super Bowl. This really makes me wish I could play the drums.
