A Combined Mosque, Church and Synagogue to Open in Abu Dhabi

The Abrahamic Family House is the name chosen for a new union between a mosque, church and synagogue in Abu Dhabi. On its planned completion in 2022, the project will mark an historic moment for religion in the UAE.

An artist’s image of the unique design was shared in the Big Apple on Friday at New York Pubic Library. It was displayed during a stakeholder meeting held by the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity. The Committee, which is spearheading this landmark project, came together to deliver their vision. It’s a vision based on religious unity between Islam, Christianity and Judaism. The targeted union of three religions was documented after Pope Francis’ visit to the UAE earlier this year, where he called for a reconciliation of all faiths and goodwill in service of universal peace.

Contemporary designs rooted in faith

The person responsible for the design of the Abrahamic Family House is Sir David Adjaye. A 53 year old British architect, he is also responsible for the $540 million (Dh1.98 billion) Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African American History and Culture. You can check out the Abrahamic Family House design and others on his Instagram.

After bidding and winning the project, Adjaye commented that he felt deeply humbled to be involved.

Each of the three buildings will have a separate entrance accessible from the street. A garden situated in the middle will connect them. Visitors to the site on Saadiyat Island will be able to enjoy the surroundings and marvel at each place of worship. Although each will be constructed differently, the buildings have been designed to stand at the same height, facing their respective place of meaning. The mosque will face the Kaaba in Makkah, the church’s altar will be positioned to the east, and the synagogue’s podium and Torah will be directed towards Jerusalem.

Back in January, Pope Francis shared a message prior to his visit in February 2019. In his speech, he described how the UAE is, “striving to be a country that is a model for co-existence, human fraternity and a meeting of faiths and civilisations”.

Certainly, the UAE is creating something that exemplifies that in what is set to be a magnificent new accomplishment.
