Dubai residents are amongst the world’s biggest VPN users, but Dubai authorities have reminded users that they could be fined AED2 million for misusing them.
New research shows that the UAE is one of the top VPN users in the world.
In case you’re wondering, VPN stands for the virtual private network. It effectively lets you browse the internet without any geographical restrictions and without being monitored.
And with WhatsApp calling and FaceTime both banned in the UAE, VPNs could be used to help get around the UAE’s local restrictions.
The new research shows that 39.91% of the population use a VPN. And by the end of the year, VPNs could have been downloaded 8 million times in the UAE.
But while VPNs are legal in the UAE, they have very strict guidelines. VPNs can be used by companies, institutions and banks for internal purposes. But any misuse can land you with an AED2 million fine and a prison term under Article 9 of the UAE Cyber Law.
So be very careful how you use your VPN in Dubai!
