The 30-year-old managed to put one of his biggest career upsets to an end when he reclaimed his unified heavyweight IBF, WBA (Super), IBO and WBO titles after emerging victorious at the highly-anticipated rematch in Saudi Arabia. Joshua (23-1, 21 KO’s) landed a whopping 107 punches in comparison to Ruiz Jr’s (33-2, 22 KO’s) tally of 60 to outplay the Mexican-American boxer in 12 rounds. Andy Ruiz Jr admits gaining excessive weight in rematch

Six months after the historic fight in New York City, Anthony Joshua sweated it out losing nearly 10 pounds. His final weight was 237 lbs (107 kgs) while Ruiz Jr weighed 283 lbs (128 kg). The 30-year-old admits he “gained too much weight,” due to which he “was chasing him too much, hesitating too much.”

“I don’t think I prepared as good as I should have. I gained too much weight but I don’t want to give no excuses. He won, he boxed me around but if we do the third, best believe I will come in the best shape of my life.”

Humble in defeat and victory

Speaking about his win, Joshua said,

“I just wanted to put on a great boxing masterclass and also show the sweet science of this lovely sport: it’s about hitting and not getting hit. I have stayed hungry and I have stayed humble. I am humble in defeat and I will remain humble in victory.”

Rematch number three?

While the third rematch remains to be confirmed, the duo agreed to square off once again at the event.
