Billboard Music Awards’ nominees and host have been revealed

Music magazine giant Billboard’s annual Music Awards is happening on May 20th and Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran are leading the nominees across 57 categories.

Kelly Clarkson will host the show

Been a main-stayer at the Billboard charts for more than 15 years, the singer is set to host the awards night and is currently a coach at ‘The Voice’ TV show. She released her eighth album ‘Meaning of Life’ mid last year which peaked at no. 2 at the Billboard 200. It’s a ‘soul’ genre inspired album unlike pop tracks like ‘Stronger(What Doesn’t Kill You)’ or ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’.

Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran lead with 15 nominations

Out of the 57 award categories, the trio leads with 15 nominations, out of which the most highly anticipated award categories are ‘Top Artist’, ‘Top Male Artist’, ‘Top Billboard 200 Artist’, ‘Top Hot 100 Artist’ and ‘Top Streaming Songs Artist’. Their nominations are followed by Drake with nine nominations and Cardi B with eight nominations.

Four newcomers will be part of the awards show

Besides for Camilla Cabello who was part of last year’s nominations for being featured in the song ‘Bad Things’ by Machine Gun Kelly, this year is a first for Post Malone, Cardi B, Khalid and 21 Savage to be part of the nominations. Last year, Khalid won an award for ‘Best New Artist’ during the MTV Video Music Awards while Cardi B won the ‘Best New Hip Hop Artist’ at this year’s iHeartRadio awards.

Awards are determined based on chart performance

Since Billboard’s music charts ranking system started in 1940, it has established itself as a platform for the top 100 songs and 200 albums based on popularity. In the case of Grammys, contenders and winners are based on votes by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences while the Billboard Music Awards’ nominations are based on ‘key interactions with music fans, as well as album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social engagement’, according to the Billboard website.
