World’s leading internet entertainment service, Netflix has made it official that they’re working on two seasons prequel to the blockbuster Bollywood franchise.
Bahubali is the highest grossing franchise in Bollywood
Bollywood’s biggest movie franchise, Bahubali is confirmed to have two seasons. With just two films, ‘Bahubali: The Beginning’ and ‘Bahubali: The Conclusion’, the series is the highest grossing Bollywood franchise, earning a whopping amount of USD 270 million. Whereas, it isn’t yet confirmed whether the cast of the film franchise will reprise their roles in the prequel series.
Bahubali 2 was the third most expensive film in Bollywood
Sequel film ‘Bahubali: The Conclusion’ was made on a budget of $36.4 million and grossed $254 million at the box office last year, making it the second most successful Bollywood film after Aamir Khan’s 2016 sports film, Dangal, which earned $302 million, according to Box Office Mojo. In terms of the production budget, Rajnikant’s 2.0 leads the list with a staggering $72.8 million budget.
Netflix’s India debut has been a success
Sacred Games, Netflix’s initial venture in the Indian market with lead roles played by Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte, received high ratings and positive reviews, getting an 89% rating by Rotten Tomatoes and 4/5 by Hindustan Times. What’s more, the entertainment giant is in the works of an upcoming original, ‘Bard of the Blood’, led by Shah Rukh Khan‘s Red Chilies Entertainment.
Bahubali prequel has been on the works since last year
For the series, Netflix partnered with production house Arka Media Works and Prasad Devineni, producer at Arka, said they’re ready to “exceed the high expectations” set by the two-part series, after working on its script for a year. “We have been working for over a year now in developing this story, a prequel to the films as a Netflix original series. We are happy to be partnering with Netflix to produce this amazing story. This partnership gives us the reach and the creative freedom to bring to life the full potential of the series in all its grandeur and exceed the high expectations set by both our films,” he said.
