Matthew Hedges, a 31-year-old British National posed as an ‘academic researcher,’ is facing trial after seeking sensitive and confidential information about the UAE.
British National in jail for five months
Before catching his return flight to the UK, Matthew Hedges was stopped at Dubai International Airport and has been detained for five months. According to The National, the 31-year old Doctoral student from Durham University was in Dubai for a two-week period, presenting himself as an “academic researcher.”
Suspected of spying after being reported
Hedge’s hit the radar of authorities when an Emirati reported him to a Prosecutor. The Emirati admitted Hedges asked him about sensitive information to do with the UAE. Prosecutors investigated the case, discovering the British National attempted to seek confidential information, to pass it on to a foreign agency.
UK authorities slammed for no action taken
Minister of State for Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Anwar Gargash expressed his disappointment at UK authorities for not looking into this case. He took to Twitter, saying “Case of Mathew Hedges extensively discussed with UK colleagues over last 5 months. Unusual & embarrassing revelations about friends & allies. With reluctance of UK authorities to address matter thru [through] common channels, due legal process needs to take its course.”
