Coachella 2018 highlights: From Beyonce’s takeover to Eminem’s surprise guests

Concert-goers at this year’s Coachella witnessed thrilling performances by its headliners and DJs over the first weekend at Indo, California. Here’s what all happened during the weekend:

Beyonce’s ‘Beychella’ takeover and reunion with Destiny’s Child

In a first, Beyonce was the first artist of colour to headline the music festival and performed the Black National Anthem (‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’). In addition to performing her solo songs, her performance was accompanied by Jay Z performing their 2003 hit ‘Crazy in Love’ along with Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. They reunited after three years after they performed at the 2015 Stellar Awards.


Cardi B’s clucky performance with a star-studded lineup

Last year, Beyonce withdrew from performing at Coachella after announcing she was pregnant. This year, Cardi B performed although she was pregnant and was accompanied by artists Kehlani, Chance The Rapper, G Eazy, YG and 21 Savage. During the show, Cardi B performed collaborations like ‘Best Life’ with Chance The Rapper, ‘Bartier Cardi’ with 21 Savage and ‘Ring’ with Kehlani.

Yodel Boy’s surprise gig and selfie with Justin Bieber

Talk about progress! 11-year-old lad Mason Ramsey, aka the Walmart yodelling kid went viral over a clip of him yodelling at a Walmart store. The clip went on to change his life as he performed at the music festival with teen DJ Whethan. The kid also hung out with Justin Bieber during the festival.

Eminem’s response to mean tweets and performance with old pals

Performing at Coachella for the first time, the US rapper’s gig also hosted his mentor, Dr Dre and friend 50 Cent along with Skylar Grey and Bebe Rexha. Dr Dre performed songs like ‘Still D.R.E,’ ‘Forgot about Dre,’ ‘Nothing but a G thang’ and his collaboration with 2pac ‘California Love’ while 50 Cent performed a medley of his hit songs.

Skylar Grey performed Rihanna’s verses to the song ‘Love The Way You Lie’ as well as parts of ‘Stan’ and Beyonce’s ‘Walk on Water’ while Bebe Rexha filled in for Rihanna’s verse in ‘The Monster’. Adding to the performance, Eminem stopped in between to react to mean tweets, part of ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Kimmel.’

Emotions burst out for The Weeknd

Crowds in large numbers attended The Weeknd’s set where he performed 23 songs, according to The Guardian. He performed popular tracks like ‘I Feel It Coming,’ ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ and ‘Pray For Me’ without Kendrick Lamar followed by songs of his latest album ‘My Dear Melancholy’ which got him emotional as he was seen in tears.
