English actor David Prowse who famously played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy has died at the age of 85.
Prowse was a former bodybuilder and was cast as Darth Vader for his incredible body and physique. Hi 6ft 6in (1.98m) frame made him the perfect Sith Lord baddy in the Star Wars franchise. And his weightlifting skills came in very handy during some of scenes.
Fans and fellow Star Wars actors including Luke Skywalker were quick to pay tribute to Prowse.
Thanks to his body building, he was close friends with competitors Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Incredible Hulk’s Lou Ferrigno.
Unfortunately, his West Country accent was not deemed suitable for the part of a menacing Hollywood villain and his lines were dubbed. The role was instead voiced by James Earl Jones.
“May the force be with him, always!” said his agent Thomas Bowington.
“Though famous for playing many monsters – for myself, and all who knew Dave and worked with him, he was a hero in our lives.”
After the initial films, he stayed in the movie world. He became Christopher Reeve’s personal trainer ahead of his role as Superman. And alongside his brother, he created some of the first gyms to open in England.
May the force be with you!
