Driverless taxis now open for all residents in Abu Dhabi

Driverless taxi’s are here!

Residents are now able to book a driverless taxi on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island, with more locations to follow.

The launch follows a successful test phase of the service which was due to finish on December 23 according to reports.

Book A Driverless Taxi in Abu Dhabi

You can book the service through the smartphone application, TXAI, which is available on both the Apple store and Google Play.

During the trial phase, trips were free and TXAI is yet to reveal pricing during future phases.

The top speed of the taxis was set at 90 kilometres an hour throughout the trial phase, however the cars typically do not go above 65 kph. There is a safety officer who sits in the driver’s seat of the vehicle and is there to intervene only if there is a problem.

Nine Locations On Yas Island

Hassan Al Hosani, who is the chief executive of Bayanat, which runs the service, said that passengers can reserve rides as soon as they download the application by following the instructions that appear on screen. In order to book a trip, you have to be in one of nine locations on Yas Island, for now.

Future operations will include more passenger operations in different areas around Abu Dhabi.

The fleet is made up of entirely electric and hybrid cars. Check out their app for more details.
