Dubai Airport turns 60 in pictures

There’s not been much to celebrate this year, but one thing worth celebrating in Dubai is the 60th birthday of the Dubai Airport.

It’s arguably the most important building in the UAE’s history. After all, where would Dubai be now if it hadn’t been for the global rise of Emirates bringing millions of travellers from across the world to our sandy city.

And Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Crown Prince of Dubai, paid his respects to the airport which has risen from a tiny strip in the desert to the world’s busiest hub. In fact, the airport has served 1.1 billion passengers since 1960. Wow!

Breaking that figure down, that’s 7.47m flights to more than 240 destinations in 95 countries.

Emirates also add their birthday message on Twitter.

Happy birthday Dubai Airport here’s to another 60 years!
