The Dubai Rugby Sevens tournament for 2020 has been cancelled, making it the first time in its 51 year history the event won’t be taking place.
The news was announced by World Rugby organisers who have decided to cancel the opening two dates of the season due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
The Dubai Rugby Sevens is a huge sporting and entertainment date and one that attracts thousands each year. It was due to take place in November with the best teams from around the world competing across three days. The other affected event is the Cape Town Sevens.
There is still some sport to look forward to
While the cancellation of the Dubai Rugby Sevens is hugely sad, there are some sporting events to look forward to this year.
It was recently confirmed that the UAE would host this year’s IPL. And the IPL is an even bigger global tournament, attracting billions of viewers from across the world.
The T20 league is a hugely lucrative one worth nearly half a billion dollars in TV revenue, tickets and advertising. It’s due to run in the UAE from September 26 until November 7. And, as ever, it’s set to feature most of the world’s best cricketers.
