Britain’s richest and prestigious horse-racing championship, the Epsom Derby witnessed a special winner on Friday and it’s a proud moment for Dubai’s Godolphin team.
Godolphin’s Masar won the title
Held at the Epsom Downs Racecourse in Sussex in England, team Godolphin’s horse, Masar wasn’t on the favourites to win the title but its jockey, William Buick was vital in riding Masar to victory. What’s more, Masar’s victory was followed by Sheikh Hamdan’s horse Dee Ex Bee finishing second. It was a clear domination by UAE at Derby.
Epsom Derby was attended by Queen Elizabeth II too
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, was shown in all smiles and even celebrated Masar’s victory with a little dance after winning the cash price worth £920,000(Dhs 4.5 million). The Ruler also met Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II to discuss relations between UAE and UK. Sheikh Mohammed was accompanied by his wife, Princess Haya bint Al Hussein and his daughter, Shaikha Jalila Bint Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Saxon Warrier failed to perform despite it being among favourites
Japanese-bred racehorse Saxon Warrier, trained by Aidan O’Brien was regarded as a favourite in winning the Derby title after winning the 2000 Guineas but failed to perform at the Epsom Derby and eventually came fourth, after jockey Olison Murphy and the America horse, Roaring Lion, trained by John Gosden, came third.
