The UAE loves a mega-project and the Etihad Rail network that stretches for 1,200km from the UAE to Saudi Arabia has just completed its next phase.
Once the massive rail network is finished, it will link all seven emirates with Saudi Arabia.
The Etihad Railproject began life in 2009 linking Shah and Habshan to the Ruwais port. And in doing so it helped cut carbon emissions by up to 80% as fewer road and truck journeys were needed.
The second of four building phases has now started which will link Abu Dhabi to Jebel Ali, Dubai, Sharjah, RAK and Fujairah. This will then link all the major ports and trading centres of the country. This ultimately means fewer huge lorry convoys on our roads, which can only be a good thing!
Impressively, the green credentials for the railway are strong.
The track is being built with wildlife in mind which means there are dozens of underpasses to let animals cross the tracks.
In total, there are 10 camel tunnels, 22 for gazelles and 78 for reptiles. Which is amazing and a bit mind-boggling when you think of it!
