First Image Of The Black Hole Released

It’s a miraculous achievement for mankind, with the first-ever real glimpse of the black hole, from a distant galaxy located about 55 million light-years away, discovered by eight multi-located satellites.

Direct look at a black hole

For long, we’ve heard scary stories and watched dramatic movies about how the black hole is fast-approaching our planet from a billion light years away. Well, this time, Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a network of eight linked telescopes situated mostly around North America, identified the black hole, located deep inside Messier 87, a galaxy located in the Virgo, which is about 55 million light-years away.

Black hole three million times the size of the Earth

With a size spanning over 40 billion km across, meaning three times the size of our planet, the gigantic black hole is really supermassive as it was believed to be. Heino Falcke from Radboud University says, “It has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Sun. And it is one of the heaviest black holes that we think exists. It is an absolute monster, the heavyweight champion of black holes in the Universe.”

On the funny side of things…

While the groundbreaking discovery created a lot of hype on social media, there have been an array of jokes about it. Fans of the Lord of the Rings series joke about the black eye being Morder and Sauron’s lost eye, while some foodies call the “ring of fire” image photoshopped from a glazed doughnut.
