India has recorded the highest number of daily Covid-19 cases in the world to date with India 314,835 new cases in the last 24 hours. Deaths during that time also rose by 2,104.
In total, India has registered nearly 16 million cases, second only in the world to America.
The latest surge has seen hospitals in major cities hit capacity. And the current surge has been made worse by an oxygen shortage.
Many hospitals in the capital Delhi have run out of oxygen, according to the city’s Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia.
While there was a national lockdown in place last year, regions are instead creating their own rules.
More regions including Delhi and one of the worst affected areas, Maharashtra, have recently announced a series of additional restrictions starting from Thursday evening.
To date, India has announced over 185,000 deaths from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
It’s also had an impressive vaccine drive. More than 130 million doses have been given to health workers, frontline staff and those above 45. But with a population of more than a billion, they’ve still got a long way to go.
