Indian man given two life sentences for killing wife using a cobra

A court in Kerala has given a husband two life sentences after he was found guilty of killing his wife using a cobra.

The court found Sooraj S Kumar guilty of murder, poisoning and destruction of evidence. And he was also found guilty of previously trying to murder his 25-year-old wife using a viper.

Unsurprisingly, the judge called the case ‘the rarest of the rare.’

The prosecution urged the judge to give Mr Kumar the death sentence. But he instead opted to give the man two life sentences instead of giving him a death sentence.

The man murdered his wife after he let a cobra bite her in her sleep last May. And he’d previously tried to kill his wife using a Russell’s viper to deliver the fatal blow.

Mr Kumar had done a lot of online research into snake bites. Investigators created a 1,000-page charge sheet that detailed his plan.

And he rented several snakes from a handler to provide the venomous bite.

The couple married in 2018 and had a daughter. But the wife’s family claimed that Mr Kumar wanted to kill her, take her money and then marry another woman.
