It seems like an unthinkable act, but a Malaysia-bound Saudi Arabia Airlines flight diverted back to Jeddah after a Saudi mother forgot her baby at the boarding gate.
Baby left alone at Jeddah airport
Earlier this month, a Saudi mother and her toddler were booked on a Saudi Arabia Airlines flight, SV832 from Jeddah to Kuala Lumpur. However, the mother forgot to take her baby to the flight and the baby was left alone at the boarding gate in King Abdul Aziz International Airport. The mother realized she forgot her baby once the flight took off, and alerted the cabin crew.
Pilot alerts ATC operators after mother refuses to continue flight
Unlike most emergencies, the Saudi Arabia Airlines flight diverted back to Jeddah after the pilot contacted Air Traffic Controller (ATC) operators to report the issue. A viral video emerged wherein the pilot can be heard saying, “May God be with us. Can we come back or what?,” In response, an operator took down the flight number and started coordinating with colleagues about the procedure to return.
Flight returns to Jeddah
In the end, an ATC operator can be heard saying “This flight is requesting to come back…a passenger forgot her baby in the waiting area, the poor thing,” followed by a command saying “Ok, head back to the gate. This is totally a new one for us.” The flight was then ordered to turn back to King Abdul Aziz International Airport, and the mother was at last, united with her baby.
