Man caught speeding at 279km/h as over 1 million traffic fines handed out in Sharjah last year

Sharjah Police have revealed some shocking speeding statistics for 2021 as 765,560 drivers were caught speeding including one driver at 279km/h.

Shockingly, a majority of the reckless driving violations were for drivers above 180km/h.

The highest speed cameras detected in Sharjah was on the Sharjah-Khor Fakkan Road where a driver was caught at 279km/h. To put that in context, the highest speed at the Abu Dhabi F1 race is 339kp/h.

The driver was given 23 black points, an AED3,000 fine and having their car impounded for 60 days. Which honestly seems a pretty light punishment.

In total, 1,174, 260 traffic fines were handed out in Sharjah last year including speeding, not wearing seat belts and using a mobile phone while driving.

And Captain Saud Al Shaiba, director of traffic awareness branch at the Traffic and Patrol Department, said many drivers were repeat offenders and ended up losing their driving license.
