New UAE weekend explained including schools and private sector

There was some huge news this morning as the UAE government announced federal workers would get a Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday weekend.

And, naturally, there were a lot of questions about the move. When will it happen? Will it affect schools? And what if you don’t work for the government.

Well, we’ve got some answers for you.

Schools

It might be short notice, but yes – schools will also start working on the new week from Monday to Friday from January 1, 2022.

Private sector

The news is only confirmed for government workers at the moment.

So if you work for a private company, so at the moment this doesn’t apply to you. But Dr. Abdul Rahman Abdul Mannan Al Awar, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, has urged private sector companies to do the same.

And to be honest, we can see it slowly – but surely – happening that private companies fall into line and work a Monday-to-Friday week as well.

Extra day of holiday

The really sharp minds though spotted that the move to a Saturday/Sunday weekend might give everyone an extra day of holiday!

January 1 is a public holiday for New Year’s Day. And the new weekend will fall on Saturday, January 1 and Sunday, January 2 will be a weekend day now for government workers.

So, we’d start being extra nice to your HR team and your bosses to make sure you start the new year with an extra day of holiday and a long weekend!
