The Olympics which were due to start in Tokyo in July will be postponed for up to a year due to the Coronavirus.
It’s the first time in the sport’s history that peacetime games have ever been delayed or postponed. The games have only ever been cancelled three times: during 1916, 1940 and 1944.
An official statement confirmed the news.
‘The Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021. This is to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community.’
2021, a big year of sport
The global sports scene has been rocked by the Coronavirus in the past few months. Several huge global events have already been postponed or cancelled.
It does mean that all being well, next year should be a bumper year of sport.
The postponed Tokyo Olympics will be joined by the Euro football Championships. Both the Men’s and Women’s tournaments were postponed from this year.
Other events to be cancelled include the Masters’ golf and the French Open tennis. All major football leagues are currently on hold, with decisions yet to be made on titles, relegation and cups.
