Police in Israel are on high alert after six Palestinians escaped from the high-security Gilboa prison.
The prisoners had clearly been watching The Shawshank Redemption or Prison Break as they’d burrowed an escape tunnel deep underground.
And the 400 remaining inmates are being moved to a different prison over fears there may be a network of escape tunnels.
The prisoners were first noticed at 3 am on Monday morning when ‘suspicious figures’ were spotted outside the prison.
Four of the men were serving life sentences and they range from 26 to 49-years-old.
Officials think they might now be trying to reach the West Bank which is 4km from the prison. Or perhaps head to the Jordanian border 14km away.
The Gilboa prison is described as one of the most secure prisons in Israel. Police are now searching Northern Israel and the West Bank for the men who appear to have had coordinated help with the outside.
It’s the first high-profile prison break in the area for over two decades.
