Scientists create a tiny camera that’s the same size as a grain of salt

American scientists have created a seriously tiny camera that is the same size as “a coarse grain of salt”.

And they say the camera can take clear, full-colour images that are good as those taken by camera lenses 500,000 times bigger.

Tiny cameras aren’t a new development. But the ability to take high-quality images with seriously tiny cameras is. And this salt-sized camera uses new technology to get its amazing pictures.

The new camera uses an incredible 1.6 million cylinder-shaped ‘posts’ that use AI to turn light into an image.

The new camera tech could be used for obvious things like better quality camera phones.

Felix Heide, who helped develop the camera said, “You wouldn’t need three cameras on the back of your phone anymore, but the whole back of your phone would become one giant camera.

“We can think of completely different ways to build devices in the future,” he added.

But the researchers at Princetown University and the University of Washington think it could be used in medicine. They think the cameras could help diagnose and treat diseases.
