Stan the $31.8 million T-Rex is coming to Abu Dhabi

The world’s most expensive fossil – known as Stan the T-Rex to his friends – is officially coming to Abu Dhabi.

The 67-million-year-old dinosaur fossil will be one of the star attractions at the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi when it opens in 2025.

The nearly 12m-long fossil was sold at auction in 2020 for $31.8million and was discovered in South Dakota in 1987. Stan is one of the best-preserved T-Rex skeletons ever found.

And, amazingly, Stan is reportedly the most copied dinosaur fossil in history – there are thought to be around 60 million copies of him in existence. So if you thought you recognised his face, that’s why.

The original Natural History Museum is one of the most famous and prestigious museums in the world, with some priceless artefacts.

“The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi will become an important part of the Saadiyat Cultural District,” said Dr Mark Beech, archaeology unit head at the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi (DCT).

“It will take its place amongst the top natural history museums in the world, committed to public education and developing and sharing scientific research.”

If you look closely at Stan’s bones, you can see he had quite a tough life. There are puncture wounds on the back of his skull that might have come from another T-Rex. And his skeleton features several other puncture marks.
