Stunning Fossil Dune area in Abu Dhabi opens to the public

The historic and stunning Al Wathba Fossil Dune Protected Area opens to the public this weekend, giving them access to over 1,700 rare fossil dunes.

The stunning natural wonder is more than 120,000 years old and is home to more than 1,700 rare fossil dunes spread over 7 square kilometres.

The beauty spot will officially open to the public this Saturday. And we can’t wait to get down and explore!

The Fossil Dune is now an officially protected area and is the first of its kind in the country. The fossils are caused by a combination of the strong desert winds and sand held together by strong salt crystals.

Guests will be able to follow well-lit trails to explore the historic site and there’s also a viewing area and gallery corner.

The site is located 45 kilometres to the east of Abu Dhabi and is open from 8 am to 10 pm during the week and until 11 pm on weekends and public holidays.

Sheikh Hamdan was on site earlier this week as he took a tour.

“The inauguration of the Fossil Dunes Protected Area comes with the aim of protecting the natural heritage of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and encouraging eco-tourism,” said Sheikh Hamdan.

“Abu Dhabi offers a unique diversity in its environments, habitats and natural features with impressive natural formations, including the wonderful fossil dunes.
