So we thought we’d take a look at the ten most viewed YouTube videos of the decade. Let the countdown begin…

10. Ed Sheeran – ‘Thinking out loud’ (2.87 billion views)

We feel like a lot of people got married to this song of Ed Sheeran’s which came out in 2014. The song by the redheaded Brit proved to be insanely popular and was an instant hit, garnering a ridiculous 2.87 billion views since it first appeared on YouTube. It featured Ed dancing with celeb dancer, Brittany Cherry.

9. OneRepublic – ‘Counting Stars’ (2.89 billion views)

It’s hard to believe that OneRepublic’s ‘Counting Stars’ came out 7 years ago! The smash hit from the American pop rock band did amazingly well globally, reaching no.1 in several places and boasting a top ten position in 20 countries. ‘Counting Stars’ still gets plenty of airplay today and the video has been watched over 2.89 billion times! It became the first music video to amass over a billion views.

8. Katy Perry – ‘Roar’ (2.97 billion views)

Katy Perry’s uplifting track about self confidence and perseverance also came out in 2013 and was a roaring success. At 2.97 billion views currently, the video features the American singer toughing it out in the jungle after a crash landing. The single sold over 6 million copies in the US, over 1 million in the UK and even won the title of Australia’s best-selling single of 2013 along with industry accolades.

7. Maroon 5 – ‘Sugar’ (3.10 billion views)

At number 7 on the countdown, it’s Maroon 5’s catchy song, ‘Sugar’. Breaching the 3 billion views barrier, the video to the 2015 track was inspired by the 2005 romantic comedy ‘Wedding Crashers’ and shows the band turning up at various weddings to surprise the bride and groom.

6. Justin Bieber – ‘Sorry’ (3.23 billion views)

It’s no surprise “The Bieb” has turned up on the list. You could say the singer has YouTube to thank for his initial rise to stardom after he was talent-spotted on the site at just 13 years old. As a kid, Bieber uploaded cover songs to YouTube and later gained a record deal before going on to reach worldwide fame. We bet little Justin would never have imagined back then that a future single of his would reach 3.23 billion views on the same platform.

5. Psy – ‘Gangam Style’ (3.48 billion views)

Korean singer and K-Pop star, Psy created a real movement (literally) when he released the video to his song, ‘Gangnam Style’. The video was created in jest of the notoriously rich neighbourhood of Gangnam-gu in Seoul. Despite its specifically Korean inspiration, Psy’s comedic video went down a storm with people all over the world. Kids and adults alike were seen attempting to recreate his famous dance moves. ‘Gangnam Style’ currently has a crazy 3.48 billion views!

4. Mark Ronson Feat. Bruno Mars – ‘Uptown Funk’ (3.75 billion)

At no.4 on the top ten list, this collab between Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars is taking us closer to the 4 billion views mark. ‘Uptown Funk’ is true to its name in that it screams of the funk era of the 80’s. Pop-king, Bruno Mars is shown throwing plenty of shapes in the video. The song has been a huge success until this day and went 11 times platinum! Bruno will be here in the UAE this New Year’s Eve, taking to the stage at the du Arena in Abu Dhabi for the Resolution By Night Festival.

3. Wiz Khalifa Feat. Charlie Puth – ‘See You Again’ (4.34 billion views)

We’re into the top 3 now and at 4.34 billion views, it’s a song by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth. The pair wrote the meaningful ‘See You Again’ as a tribute to the late Paul Walker who was famous for his part in the Fast and Furious films. The song was commissioned by the Furious 7 team. Paul met a tragic and untimely death following a serious car accident but his memory was beautifully honoured in the video to ‘See You Again’.

2. Ed Sheeran– “Shape of You” (4.54 billion views)

Look out, it’s Ed again with his 2017 song, ‘Shape of You’. Considering the track was only released a few years ago, it’s amazing to see that it’s currently at 4.54 billion views. It’s no surprise the track has gained an outrageous amount of views when you consider that it peaked at number-one on the singles charts of 34 countries. It was also the first song to hit 2 billion streams.

1. Luis Fonsi Feat. Daddy Yankee – “Despacito” (6.58 billion views)

Assuming you didn’t scroll straight here, then congrats, it’s finally the one you’ve been waiting for! The number 1 most viewed video of the decade is another music vid: ‘Despacito’ by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee. At 6.58 billion views (!!!) even Ed didn’t stand a chance of beating this one. Considering the guys who brought us this smasher of a track were previously relatively unknown outside of Latin America, it’s even more amazing to think what they’ve achieved. The song has broken plenty of records including becoming the first video on YouTube to reach the milestones of three, four, five, and six billion views. This parody video of the song by a Filipino YouTuber is pretty funny too.

So there you have it! The most watched YouTube videos of the decade. What’s topped your list in the last ten years, if it wasn’t one of these?
