Khabib Nurmagomedov remains UFC’s reigning lightweight champion after defeating Dustin Poirier, but what’s next? Dana White suggests a possible rematch versus Conor McGregor or a fight with no1 contender Tony Ferguson, whilst Khabib is open to a GSP super fight in Africa!
Dana White suggests Tony Ferguson or Conor McGregor for Khabib’s next fight
“Tony Ferguson gets the next shot and obviously if for whatever reason Tony can’t take the fight or doesn’t want the fight at that time then we would figure out what was next but Conor would make a lot of sense.”
Khabib Nurmgamodov calls for a charity fight versus Georges St-Pierre
“Maybe I can fight with GSP. George St Pierre is very very big star. They can build this arena in next three months. And we can fight somewhere in Congo. And all money we make we can use on charity.”
After Khabib Nurmagomedov defended his lightweight title, Dustin Poirier broke down in tears at the post-event press conference talking through the fight.
Dustin Poirier in tears post UFC 242 loss
“The guy[Khabib] is good. He’s the world champ. Maybe I could’ve done more. I was very prepared for this fight, to fight 25 minutes.
He did exactly what I thought he was going to do. I’m gonna’ beat myself up, I’m the only one who has to deal with this-me and my family. I’m just wondering if I could’ve tried a little bit harder to get off the fence maybe. But that’s just questions I might have to live with for the rest of my life.
For sure, he was winning the rounds obviously. Taking me down and dominating. I felt like he was squeezing hard and slicker. I felt like he was getting a little weaker. Coming into this fight, I thought later in the third, fourth or fifth were going to be my rounds, not that I was planning to give up on the first two but I knew they were going to be tough.
So, coming back to this stool after each of those rounds in the beginning, I wasn’t getting damaged, with shots that were hurting me and that cut me. But, I thought the deeper we got into the fight the more slick I was gonna’ be but it’s fighting man.”
Khabib: “I think I deserve this”
Meanwhile, the reigning lightweight champion says he deserves this win and commands respect.
“Give me just respect. Put me at number one pound-for-pound fighter next week, because I think I deserve this. I dominate all my opponents and I’m undefeated. I think. I deserve some respect.”
