UAE first country to use approved Covid-19 treatment

The UAE has become the first country to approve and use a highly effective new treatment for Covid-19.

The new treatment can reduce hospitalisation for over 24 hours and reduce deaths by up to 85%. It’s best used as an early treatment against Covid-19. It’s been approved for adults and children above 12 with ‘mild to moderate COVID-19 disease who are at risk of progression to hospitalisation or death.’

The emergency use of Sotrovimab (Vir-7831) has been approved by The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP).

The drug works as ‘a monoclonal antibody’ which effectively clones white blood cells to help your immune system fight off Covid-19.

It’s also been endorsed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) but the UAE is the first country in the world to license and approve the Covid-19 treatment for public use.

“The new medicine will greatly contribute to speeding up the recovery of patients, reducing Covid-19-related deaths and hospitalization period in intensive care units. It will also support the country’s efforts being made to conduct Covid-19 tests and administer vaccines, retaining its leading position among the world’s foremost countries, dealing efficiently with the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Abdul Rahman bin Mohammad bin Nasser Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention
