UAE patient to be given Israeli kidney in new transplant exchange

An Israeli hospital has flown in a kidney for a patient in the UAE as part of a brand new transplant exchange.

The kidney was donated by an Israeli woman and was flown from Tel Aviv to Abu Dhabi yesterday.

The kidney was packed in ice for the three-and-a-half-hour flight to Abu Dhabi.

And the transplant exchange is working in the other direction as a woman in Abu Dhabi is donating her kidney to a woman in need in Israel.

What an amazing world we live in sometimes!

The kidney transplant exchange was first discussed six months ago and yesterday it became a reality.

And it could be the start of even more transplant exchanges between the countries.

“I hope this will open the door for further collaboration in other fields of medicine between our countries,” said Professor Eytan Mor, head of the transplant centre at the Sheba Medical Centre.

According to the National Transplant Centre, more than 1,000 Israeli adults and children are awaiting organ transplants.
