UAE radically updates drug and prison laws

The UAE has brought in a wide range of new law changes to make the UAE’s 50th year including radically updating its drug and prison laws.

The new laws give more leniency to first-time offenders. And the UAE is now seeking to focus on rehabilitating offenders over punishment.

Those convicted of drug use and possession will serve time in secure detention where they’ll be offered treatment and education programmes.

And deportation is no longer mandatory for drug use in expats. Instead, the judges will be able to decide if the convicted felon is allowed to stay.

Another law change is that carrying food, drinks or any other products which contain marijuana, hashish or THC, found in cannabis, will no longer be a criminal offence.

The items will be confiscated and destroyed instead.

The updated UAE drug laws were announced by The National.
