Celebrations started with specially choreographed shows by Dubai Fountain and a series of dazzling light shows on Burj Khalifa’s iconic façade. At 8:20pm precisely, Burj Khalifa’s façade displayed a light show leading to the five-second countdown, followed by a vibrant spectacle by Dubai Fountain to end the public celebration on a high.

Social media users were taken by surprise with XDubai’s video to mark the countdown, showing a sequence of adrenaline-filled stunts performed across the city to deliver the UAE flag to the venue. A teaser released by SheikhHamdan and Sheikh Maktoum on their Instagram handles yesterday afternoon to build the hype until the official stunt video was released in the evening. From skydiving to free-falling and off-roading, the thrill is for real!
Chance to be part of Expo 2020
Residents now have a chance to give back to the UAE by joining the ‘Houe of Volunteers’ programme. The voluntary-based programme is looking for 30,000 residents to join the Expo 2020 team, with roles related to hospitality, sponsorships and guest relations. So far, the programme has received 8,000+ applications. Abeer Al Hosani, Head of Volunteers at Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “The House of Volunteers will enable Expo 2020’s volunteer community to learn, network and engage as a group of like-minded people striving towards the same goal. More than 30,000 volunteers will come together to welcome the world to the UAE, while undergoing their own personal journeys of growth and development with Expo 2020.”
