This evening after sunset, a rare astral event is due to take place.
For about two hours the ‘Christmas Star’ will be able to be seen by the naked eye.
This celestial phenomenon will occur in front of our eyes when the planets of Saturn and Jupiter are near alignment.
It Last Happened Almost 800 Years Ago!
The Christmas Star was last spotted close to 800 years ago and it won’t be visible in our skies until 2080!
So this is really a once in a lifetime opportunity…
The Christmas Star will appear above the UAE from this evening at sunset (5.40pm) until 7.50pm, according to the Dubai Astronomy Group.
This event is also referred to as the ‘Great Conjunction’. Conjunctions can happen at any time, however this one will be more visible as it falls on the winter solstice.
Speaking about the occurrence, Henry Throop, astronomer in the Planetary Science Division at Nasa Headquarters in Washington says:
“You can imagine the solar system to be a racetrack, with each of the planets as a runner in their own lane and the Earth towards the centre of the stadium. From our vantage point, we’ll be able to be to see Jupiter on the inside lane, approaching Saturn all month and finally overtaking it on December 21.”
If you want a great view of the spectacle, the Dubai Astronomy Group is hosting a paid viewing (Dhs30) at Al Thuraya Astronomy Centre in Mushrif Park.
